Minor Earthquake

about

This is an homage to Eddie Van Halen, who passed away on 10/6/20. I can't come close to what Eddie does, but I did want to record something that would be a tribute to a true guitar genius, feeble attempt though it may be. This one, "Minor Earthquake", was purposely set to clock in at 1:42, just like "Eruption"...and it also is one guitar track marrying rhythm and lead guitars, though more rhythm for my track than Eddie's, which was more lead soloing. It was a one-off impromptu thing on my part and like I said, doesn't come close to what our guitar hero pulled off, especially as he was the one who widely introduced the innovative technique of two-hand tapping (aka bi-manual riffing, or whatever you want to call it) to the world with "Eruption"...and he is often imitated, but never duplicated.

Van Halen recorded Eruption in 1977 and released it in 1978. When I first heard it was on a school bus going to school. It blew my young mind then in much the same way as when it was played by "Doc" Brown through the Walkman in "Back to the Future". It really was from outer space in terms of what the instrument could do up to that point. What is he doing? How is he making those sounds??

RIP EVH. You are one of the greats and will be missed!!
